Breast milk is best for your baby

The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. After six months of age, infants should receive age appropriate foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.

Your 6-year-old’s mental and physical developments

Your 6-year-old’s mental and physical developments

Every child is different, and that includes when and how he develops. But knowing the general milestones, especially at the important age of six, will give you a definite advantage when it comes to helping him grow and cementing a lasting parent-child relationship.

It’s at this age when children start making strides in their motor and language skills. At the same time, their physical development also means this is a good time to get them involved in activities such as athletics, dancing, or riding a bike.

Mental development
Although the brain of a 6-year-old is almost full-sized, mental developments will continue for the next 20 years or so. It’s also at this time when a child is starting to be able to differentiate between right and wrong, and starts actively interacting with the world rather than just observing and reacting.
More advanced concepts like organisation and time management will still require your supervision though, so remember to be on hand to guide them in these areas.

Social and emotional developments
Friendships will start to form at this stage. You will need to help your child understand these concepts and related areas. These include teaching your child how to share, dealing with relationships, and expressing emotion.
Children at this age are also aware of authority figures and will want to seek approval from their teachers and parents.

Parenting tips

  • Give your child a structured environment and implement routines, including physical activity.
  • Enforce the consequences of bad behaviour, but also offer positive reinforcement when your child does something right.
