Breast milk is best for your baby

The World Health Organisation recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. Unnecessary introduction of bottle feeding or other food and drinks will have a negative impact on breastfeeding. After six months of age, infants should receive age appropriate foods while breastfeeding continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Consult your doctor before deciding to use infant formula or if you have difficulty breastfeeding.

I have read and understood this. No thanks, visit Friesland Campina's website.

Your independent 6-year-old

Your 6-year-old is now old enough to handle basic chores and tasks. In fact, don’t be surprised if he asks you for something to do as he explores his newfound independence.

From housework to preparing his own meals, this is the best time to introduce some responsibility and self-reliance to your child. Just remember to always be at least within earshot when he’s doing something on his own, especially if it’s for the first time.

Here are some age-appropriate tasks for a 6-year-old:

Bath time
Let your child take a bath or shower on his own, but stay close by in case he needs a hand. You might want to adjust the temperature of the water first to make sure he doesn’t scald himself.

Breakfast and snacks
Give your child the opportunity to make his own simple meals, be it a sandwich or cereal with milk. Under supervision, you might also want to teach him how to use the toaster. If it’s a school lunch, you can also let him decide what he wants to eat, and educate him on the benefits of a healthy diet.

Packing for school
You might need to supervise initially, but your child should be able to decide for himself what books and stationery are needed for the school day.

Chores
At this age, your child should be able to pick up after himself, make his bed, and keep his room tidy. You can also introduce him to simple household chores such as vacuuming or folding the laundry.

Whatever tasks you decide on, remember that every child develops differently. Keep a close eye on your child and don’t forget to praise and encourage him when he does something right.
